Continuing from last week, Black Bullet ramps up the action once more with another explosive ep.
It’s do or die time now as the threat of a Stage Five Gastrea is looming over Rentaro and Enju. Can they find and stop Kagetane before it’s too late?
Here’s my review!
Standing atop the cliff, Rentaro, Enju and Kayo Senju prepare to enter the battle and bring this manhunt to an end. Kayo is also still looking for Shougen Ikuma, as she’s his Initiator. They hear gun fire in the distance and are about to jump down when Kayo says she’ll stay behind to hold off the approaching Gastrea. Pretty much the moment that happened I knew she was dead right there. Saying she’ll run if things get too bad, Rentaro and Enju leave her to face the hordes of Gastrea.
Once down in the ruined city they find the rest of the groups that went down to fight Kagetane, all of which died. Even that guy Shougen Ikuma died as well, which was a surefire way of saying Kayo was pretty much guaranteed dead now. From here we have a lengthy battle between Rentaro and Kagetane and Enju fighting his daughter Kohina. Rentaro opens up with some special attacks that fend off Kagetane’s Maximum Pain attack and send him flying back. Hmm, what’s Rentaro got planned? As this is all going on we cut back to the control room where Seitenshi is overseeing the battle; she’s called in bet girl Kisara Tendou to ask her if she thinks Rentaro and Enju can survive this final tilt against Kagetane. Info dump coming now as Kisara explains what exactly Rentaro is.
Turns out 10 years ago (during that opening sequence in ep 1) when that huge Gastrea attacked, Rentaro was injured very badly. He lost an eye, arm, leg and had many other injuries too. But he wasn’t killed, rather they built him back making him stronger, faster, and a better fighter to take on the Gastrea. We finally see these upgrades that were made to Rentaro as he transforms into his combat mode and shows off his Varanium limbs (courtesy of Dr. Sumire Muroto) and lays the beat down on Kagetane. Thanks to these upgrades Rentaro is finally able to take down Kagetane once and for all. Or so we’re led to believe. Honestly I don’t think he’s dead; think about it, usually when the bad guy is “killed” and he falls into the water, he’s never fully dead. I’ve seen it happen many times in movies and TV shows, so unless you have the body of this bad guy and you can confirm he’s actually dead (Darth Maul doesn’t count okay because it’s a proven fact you can survive getting cut in half and falling down a huge shaft, because why would that kill you anyways?) so I think we’ll see more of Kagetane at some point. Maybe he’ll come back in some super cyborg mode in ep 10 and start raising hell for everyone? What do you think, is Kagetane really dead?
The second half of the ep is Rentaro and Enju trying to stop the Stage Five Gastrea that Kagetane has summoned. So we all know that Stage Five Gastrea are really bad and when they show up, lots of people die, so needless to say Rentaro and Enju are pretty taken aback when Kisara says it’s up to them to stop it. Seen in the previous ep, the huge railgun thing called Heaven’s Ladder (it was called something different last week I’m pretty sure) is where Rentaro and Enju need to get to if they want to stop the rampaging Gastrea.
Once inside and in the gunners seat, they leave it to the control center where Kisara is to take the shot. But obviously it’s not going to be that easy. A problem must arise that only Rentaro and Enju can fix, forcing them to be the ones to line up and take the shot. The problem? No ammo in the railgun. Wow isn’t that the first thing you should check? So having no huge shells laying around, Rentaro rips out his Super Varanium arm and loads it into the chamber to use as ammo. Wow I never thought I’d see someone use their arm as ammo in a railgun. Anime continues to amaze me at times.
With time running out Rentaro is starting to have trouble putting himself together to actually take the shot now. He’s unsure of himself, as would be normal in a situation like this, and can’t really get a grip to actually take the shot. Thankfully Enju is there with him and comforts him enough to line up a kill shot and pull the trigger. The Gastrea explodes sending huge gross chunks flying into the city. I imagine that beached dead whale over in Newfoundland will be like when it blows up.
The episode ends with a few crucial scenes too. First up Rentaro heads back outside to find Kayo, who like predicted, is wounded, infected and about to turn into a Gastrea. In an emotional scene Rentaro is forced to shoot her as it’s the only way to help her. Man, if that was me I’d have a hard time pulling that trigger, mainly because it’s not a normal thing to have to kill a little girl like that. Thankfully they didn’t actually show her getting shot, that would’ve been too much; already seeing that other girl getting killed was bad enough.
Taken back to the city Rentaro confronts Kikunojou Tendou about how he might have been the one who actually brought the Stage Five in and just blamed Kagetane for it. Interesting. Rentaro also took a look inside the box too, the one he was told by Seitenshi to bring back, what’s in it comes as a shock and really make me wonder what’s going on now. I’m sure as things continue it’ll be explained, but I’ve heard that Black Bullet is only going to be 13 eps, meaning there is a high chance things might not be fully explained and there might be loose ends. Lastly we learn that Enju’s corrosion rate is at 42%, meaning once it reaches 50%, she’ll have to be killed because she’ll start turning into a Gastrea. I’m guessing that Rentaro knows this but opted out on telling Enju over how she might react to it. Needless to say this will be a key point that will play a big part later on down the road.
So overall I liked this ep, it was action packed and it deepens the mystery too. I look forward to seeing how this will progress in the coming weeks. Let’s take a look at some screen shots now.
So that bring us to end end for this week’s ep of Black Bullet. Up next I’ll have a review for ep 4 of No Game, No Life, so stay tuned for that! Here’s what we’ll be dealing with next week on Black Bullet!
