Words can’t properly describe the feelings I had watching this episode. I actually can’t remember watching anything that made me feel like this episode did. I knew it was going to happen (well had a strong feeling it was going to) but once it finally happened, man I was swept up in the moment. Episode 9 left me breathless and by far proves why Love Live is indeed an anime you need to watch.
Here’s my review~!
Last week left us with the build up of what could be something amazing, and after watching episode 9, I can’t think of another episode that left me with the feelings this ep left me with. In one word, to describe this ep: perfection. A rating for this ep: 10/10. The best part of this ep: everything. This was how you deliver an experience that will leave your fans amazed and I’ve gotta hand it to Sunrise, you guys blew my expectations out of the water with a billion nukes and then some. So I guess I should start the review now.
It’s winter time. Snow is falling and everything looks beautiful. It’s the big day for the girls of μ’s as the final day of preliminaries is here! But before they get to the performance, Honoka, Umi and Kotori have to deal with student council matters first at the school’s open house. Once they’re finished with that, they’ll meet up with the rest of the girls at the venue for the performance.
The first few minutes of the episode is very nice as it shows each of the girls as they prepare for the big day. Ericchi is shown at home with her younger sister, Arisa, as she gives her support and tells her that she’ll be there watching the performance. They’re visited by Nozomi who I’m guessing comes by each morning as the two walk to school. We then cut over to Rin, Hanayo as they wait outside of Maki’s house for her to get ready to go. Maki walks out the front gate a few moments later so the three can continue they’re trek to the venue. Another Maki tsundere moment here too. She’s so cute when she does that!
Nico’s house is lively as always as her little siblings are all just as excited for the big day as she is. Ericchi and Nozomi stop by her place on their way to the venue, Nozomi showing off her lightening fast reflexes as she’s able to block Nico from slamming the door on them. At school, Umi, Honoka, and Kotori have all arrived there and are ready for the open house to start, but due to the snowy weather, the open house has to be pushed back an hour! This is bad news as the three girls have a tight schedule they’re running on so they can make it in time for the performance. But with spirits high, they press forward in hopes things will work out well.
The other six girls have arrived at the venue and are speechless and the size of the stage. For the final round they get to perform on a grand stage in front of a massive audience. Jumping back to the school, Honoka, Umi and Kotori rush outside to see if they can help in some way, but the other students have the shoveling under control. They tell them to focus on the open house and saving energy for the performance later on. I really liked this part as it showed how much everyone in the school cares about μ’s and what Love Live means to them.
Back with the other six, they’re waiting in a nearby building for the show to start, but as they’re standing around, A-RISE shows up to get the tension building. They’re just as amped up to go as everyone in μ’s is. This performance is a big deal and only the best group will win. A-RISE states they won’t lose, but the determination of the girls in μ’s is just as strong, if not stronger. Both sides want victory, but only one will attain it.
Back at school, Honoka, Umi and Kotori are all finished up with their duties, but something else has blocked them along the way: the snow. It hasn’t stopped snowing and not only are the roads back up, but the trains have stopped as well. They’re stuck at school with no way of getting to the performance in time. In a last ditch effort, Honoka suggests the only remaining way to make it in time: they run. This whole sequence with the three girls trying to run through the snow really got me emotional. I’m not gonna lie, I was very closing to crying as this part unfolded. The drama that was presented for us: they need to get to the performance, the weather has stopped all fast means of transportation, time is running out and they can’t let everyone down. They all want to win Love Live and the only way that’s going to happen is if all nine girls are on stage performing.
What adds to this scene is the music. Rewatch this episode and listen very carefully to the music in this scene (and the rest of the episode for that matter) but listen to the music and it really adds yet another layer of drama and emotion to this already tense sequence. They’ve made it this far and now they’re on the brink of not making it in time. I was just on the edge of my seat watching this and cheering them to keep going and make it there in time. But as if I didn’t need a reason to start crying, the fierce snow storm calms down and they can see the road finally. Guess what, it’s all been shoveled by the students! They even brought them boots to wear! Oh man this moment was just so beautiful! Seeing all the students come together to help them make it there in time. Man it hit right in the feels. So now with a clear path through to the venue, Honoka, Umi and Kotori can safely run the way there and make it in time for the performance!
Arriving on the scene Honoka and Ericchi share a tearful embrace before thanking all the girls who helped make their journey possible. From here the credits start to roll as the girls all get ready and take the stage for their performance. In the crowd are all the students from school, siblings and parents there to watch. What follows is one of the best performances in this series. The song is Snow Halation, one of my top favorite songs from all of Love Live, and they perform it flawlessly.
Here are some screens from their performance.
Just a few more general pics from the ep.
Also, if you haven’t seen the original Snow Halation, be sure to check it out!
So after watching this ep, I’m left breathless! It was by far the best ep I’ve seen yet and I can’t believe how well everything came together for them. I just hope they out did A-RISE and can win! So what did you think of the ep? How much did you love it? What was your favorite part? Like I said at the starting, words can’t really describe the feelings I had after watching this the first time, it was just so amazing and I have to hand it to Sunrise for making this one ep I’ll never forget. All around this was just one spectacular experience and it totally made my day.
So up next I’ll be back with another Black Bullet review tomorrow. I’ll also really try hard to get that WIXOSS ep 4 review out at some point this week as well. Alright then, here’s what we can expect next week!
I’ll cya in the next post!
