This week we have an ep about Yaya and Hana, and the friendship that’s slowly but surely forming.
Here’s my review!
Last week we had an ep about Yaya and how Hana’s arrival really hit her personally and emotionally. She left suddenly left out and unneeded, as her long time friend Naru was spending so much time with the new girl. This week though, through a series of events, Yaya ends up spending the afternoon with Hana and the two, while still not on the best of terms, seem to really enjoy their time together. Yaya of course is still quite tsundere about the matter and while she’ll never say it aloud, her action and body language is quite revealing as to what her feelings are now.
So for starters I love how this ep opened up. I’m sure we all caught the awesome James Bond reference there, haha it was so funny! After this it paves the way for the opening bit of this ep, which is Hana and Naru returning to the yosakoi shop to finally get past the scary guy at the door and see what’s inside. Turns out that guy isn’t as scary as they thought, and once they get talking, he’s pretty chill and wants to do everything he can to help the girls on their yosakoi path.
After getting a feel for what the girls already know about yosakoi, the manager is about to give them the right pointers they need so they can get up to speed. One thing he mentions in regards to the naruko, is a more efficient way to clap it, something both girls didn’t know. He also tells them about different types of naruko’s as well as different sizes too, more things the girls didn’t know. One of the key things he mentions to them is what the anime will be leading up to (I’m guessing), a big yosakoi festival being held in their town this year.
But obviously if Hana and Naru want to take part in this festival, they’ll need more people, something they don’t have at the moment. Recruiting at school is the only place to get new members, but that it quickly halted by the student council president Machi Tokiwa. Now unknown to me until I searched up her name, Machi is voiced by one of my favorite voice actresses, that being Manami Numakura. As we know, Numakura is voicing Sakurai in the currently airing Rail Wars, but she’s also voiced characters in Akuma no Riddle, Love Lab, Arpeggio, The iDOLM@STER and even Black Rock Shooter. It’s awesome learning that she’s got a role in this anime too, suddenly it makes it that much better.
Like most student council presidents are off the start, Machi is strict and unwilling to let the girls recruit new members for the yosakoi club. It may also have a bearing that they’re currently running an unregistered club and only 2 members, but either way Machi is not letting this continue on her watch. I mentioned her in my ep 1 review, but Tami Nishimikado, the vice-president is a bit more sympathetic towards the girls and their quest for yosakoi greatness. Tami also makes an appearance later on in this ep as Hana and Naru are out practicing. But before they get that far, they still need a club adviser. Sally-chan-sensei ends up being the go to teacher for Hana, as Sally-chan just so happens to be always willing to help out the students.
What I first thought when I saw Sally-chan-sensei was Sakura Karasuma from Kiniro Mosaic. I don’t know about you, but Sakura came to mind, maybe it’s just because they have similar characteristics or something, but either way she came to mind. By the way, if you haven’t seen Kiniro Mosaic yet, then it’s definitely one to check out, and not just because it’s a cute girls doing cute things anime, but it’s a really enjoyable slice of life anime. Plus if you’ve seen Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka? and really enjoyed that, Kiniro Mosaic is pretty much exactly like that. And if you want more incentive to watch Kiniro Mosaic, it’s getting a season 2 because it’s so awesome. Pretty much just go check it out, I’m sure you’ll love it.
Another point I found out while doing research for this review, is that Sakura is actually the older sister of Machi, but due to a not so good relationship, Machi doesn’t want her to be the adviser for the club. Yeah spoilers there, but they’re not exactly life changing spoilers, I’m sure we’d have figured this out quickly. So this will be a continuing problem in the coming eps, Hana and Naru trying to lock down Sally for being their adviser.
The second half of this ep is probably my favorite. It’s about Hana and Yaya having an afternoon our together. The orginal plan was that Yaya would meet up with Naru to see a movie, but then Hana crashed at Yaya’s place and the two kinda just started hanging out for the day. While Yaya won’t admit it, she’s starting to like Hana more, their day out changing the image of her that she first had. In the end we know that Yaya will join them in the quest for yosakoi, but until she can come to terms with her feelings, she’s still playing it like she’s not interested.
Oh yeah also very bad mistake by forgetting about Naru and the movie. Naru is understandably upset about missing the movie due to Yaya hanging out with Hana for the day. But nothing can prepare them for the bigger problems that await them in the quest for yosakoi. The student council is once again halting progress, saying they can’t use the roof for practice anymore. Hmm, looks like we’ve got trouble coming now! We’re left with that until next week, where we’ll get some drama unfolding now.
So Hanayamata has passed the 3 ep test, it’s very enjoyable and I’m loving it so far. Honestly it’s anime like this that I really enjoy, simple, easy to follow and just fun to watch. Having cute girls, great music and beautiful art is also a plus too, but some anime just carry this atmosphere that makes watching each episode so enjoyable. I’m looking forward to more Hanayamata in the coming weeks, and I recommend you check it out if you haven’t already.
Let’s take a look at some screen shots now.
