These two episodes were a treat. We’re introduced to new a species of humanoid Danger Beasts and get more of Esdeath’s backstory. Esdeath’s backstory is the most interesting thing about these two. I don’t see how the new Danger Beasts are important, they seem to exist so Esdeath and Tatsumi get to meet again. As of writing this, I don’t see any other point for them. They look menacing enough. After all, the first time we see one it eats a man in front of his wife. These new and brutal Danger Beasts are wiped out far too quickly to be anything too significant. In the same episode they are introduced, they’re mostly exterminated by the Jaegers. The big draw of episode thirteen was the back story of Lubbock, specifically the history between him and Najenda. We learn that Lubbock loves Najenda, and he joined the military and subsequently defected only to be by her side. Now on to the next episode!
Now, Esdeath is the star of this episode for me. Again, every time Esdeath is on screen, I love it. She’s cold-blooded, she’s powerful, and she’s sadistic. Esdeath’s backstory shows us where a lot of these traits come from. She’s from a Danger Beast hunting tribe in the north, where the land is cold and unforgiving. The scene we get to experience is of Esdeath as a child, hunting Danger Beasts in the frozen wastes. She doesn’t hesitate for a second to kill her prey, and returns to her village with the Danger Beast in tow. I don’t know what I was expecting here, but it certainly wasn’t the happy family scene we get. Or rather, I didn’t expect them to be happily gutting away at Danger Beasts together. In a pretty cliche fashion, Esdeath’s entire village is wiped out and she has to watch her father die. Eventually she kills all of those responsible.
But this is the interesting part of all this; she didn’t do it out of revenge. That’s right, she didn’t destroy the culprits out of revenge, but out of necessity. Esdeath was ordered to kill them, so she buried them in ice to make a swift example of them. Esdeath is a person that values power above all else. Even with the slaughter of her tribe and family, she views it as a consequence of their weakness. It’s at this point Tatsumi finally realizes what all of us knew; he will never be allies with Esdeath. Though Esdeath loves him, she can’t change her nature for Tatsumi and likely will never even try. Anyway, our hero and his stalker/lover get back to the mountain they disappeared. We end episode 14 with a little foreshadowing of the inevitable conflict with Esdeath.
We continue to get foreshadowing of upcoming events as the inevitable confrontation with the Jaegers is coming up. That’s what I’m waiting for, and I’m sure everyone else is as well. I’m practically salivating to see what everyone can really do. I know I mentioned it in my last review, but I especially want to see Kurome’s Teigu in action. I imagine whatever it is, it’s be very, very strong. The fight between the two power rangers in the series should be something to look forward to, especially now that Tatsumi has been leveling himself up. Hopefully in the next episode we see our main party finally make the transition from PvE grinding to some intense PvP action!
Now as usual, it’s time to end with a bonus pic from Pixiv!
