After probably the best ep to date, Euphonium dials it down a bit for a mostly relaxing ep, giving us a chance to catch our breath in this calm before the storm.

Here’s my review.

So after last week’s outing we’re taking things a little more slow this week, enjoying a nice school festival and having a few dramatic moments during a raining day as well. Easily the highlights of this first half are seeing the girls in various outfits. From an Alice in Wonderland style outfit worn by Kumiko, Hazuki and Midori, to the sexy maid outfit Natsuki was wearing (sadly seen for too short a time) this school festival was a great scene for sure. Also worth noting Nozomi and Mizore wearing cute maid outfits too, they looked great. Enjoy the pics.

We also have would could be the first time this season that Kumiko and Shuuichi actually are in a scene together and talk for a bit. If they were before then please correct me. It’s still pretty obvious that Shuuichi has feelings for Kumiko, even though she doesn’t really seem all that interested in him,  nevertheless he’s still trying to make some progress but he never seems to get anywhere. Then again maybe a haunted house isn’t really the best location to start bringing up sensitive topics like your feelings for someone, because Reina dressed as a ghost jumped out right in the middle of their conversation, scaring them both. Maybe next time, Shuuichi.

The back half of this ep takes a pretty dramatic turn and goes from the fun-filled atmosphere of the school festival to a more serious tone. It starts with Kumiko’s older sister, Mamiko, coming home soaked from the typhoon and announces she’s dropping out of college. There have been some tensions in Kumiko’s household for the past few eps, didn’t really talk too much about them as I wanted to touch on other things at the time but now it’s more than just a brief scene so I’ll get into it a bit more.

What’s ironic about this situation, at least to Kumiko, is that Mamiko used to nag her about studying hard so she could do well in life. Now we’re seeing Mamiko dropping out of college for reasons that have yet to be explained. We’ll learn more in the coming eps I’m sure. Too frustrated with her sister Kumiko decides it’s best to walk it off, so taking just an umbrella she heads out into the typhoon for a walk. Um… no coat? Kumiko is wearing just a t-shirt and jean cut offs, not exactly something you wear out in the middle of a storm. But for those who like seeing sexy wet legs, I guess this isn’t too bad a moment.

During her travels she bumps into Taki-sensei at a local flower shop. Hmm, what could be possibly be doing there, during a typhoon? It’s here that we finally get some more back story about Taki-sensei and his late wife. From the context and what little is said, I’m guessing Taki-sensei was on his way to visit his wife’s grave. The flowers, the picture of her on the dashboard on his car, and him saying it’s a special day, it all adds up to that. During the short conversation between Kumiko and Taki-sensei we learn that his wife used to attend Kitauji as well and even made it to the Nationals, but didn’t win gold. It seems that she became sick during some point after college but she still wanted to lead her band to the Nationals and win gold. Sadly she wouldn’t get the chance to as she passed away. So it’s safe to assume Taki’s motivation going into the Nationals is to win gold for his wife. But as brought out by Kumiko, Taki-sensei didn’t say much as he probably didn’t want to make this whole situation all about him and force his feelings on the band.

We end the ep with Asuka seemingly being visited at school by someone. I’m going out on a limb here and saying it’s her mother but I don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see who this woman is and why she’s there to see her. Please no spoilers if you’ve read the source material. Just one more point to mention about Asuka, during a performance at the school festival earlier in the ep, we see her for a brief moment looking… distant I guess you could say when she mentions the Nationals coming up. Is this reaction by her linked to this mysterious visitor at the end of the ep? Most likely, but we’ll have to wait till next week to find out what the deal is.

Until then, the next piece begins.

So that’s it for this week’s ep. Being that I’ve got another Wednesday off I decided to get this review out so I don’t have to worry about it come Saturday. I don’t know if this will be a thing going forward, work is kinda slow these days so I do have more days off. If Wednesday off seems to be the new thing though you can be sure to see new reviews out on that day, unless something comes up and I’m busy.

Anyways, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this ep so feel free to leave a comment below or hit me up on Twitter and I’ll be sure to reply in a timely fashion. As always, thank you so much for reading this and I’ll see you right back here for the next ep!
